Claudell Pitts (1906-2006) was a well-known Salem resident who worked as a domestic servant for many local families (including the donor's) and in Connecticut for a while. In her later years she lived in the family home on Mount Vernon Avenue, and the donor (one of her last employers)looked out for her. After her death, as her house was being sold, Mrs. Buckley cleaned out a large box of family papers and photographs, which she later presented to the museum. While many items were discarded, much of the material was kept as a record of the social and financial life of a local African American family through the 20th Century. Much of the material needs better organization. June 2016 PastPerfect Conversion |
