We hope you find this a valuable resource for information about the collections at the Salem Museum. Our collections include materials on the rich history of Salem, Virginia and the Roanoke Valley of Virginia. Let these collections answer your questions about what came before us.
The Keyword Search allows you to perform a general search for any of our catalog records (Objects, Photos, Archives, Library). If you search for more than one keyword, the results will include records which contain any of those words. If you want only the records which contain all your keywords, type AND between each keyword. For example, entering Lakeside Park will return records that include the word Lakeside or the word Park. Typing Lakeside AND Park will retrieve records that contain both search terms. The * can be used as a wildcard to retrieve search terms with multiple endings. (i.e. the search term history* will retrieve history, histories, historical, etc.) Searches are not case sensitive.
The Advanced Search allows you to be more specific with your search. You can search words or phrases with different categories or use multiple categories to further narrow your search results. Phrase searches with quotes and wildcards (*) are available in Advanced Search. If you search for “Lakeside Park” the results will include only records that contain that phrase.
The Random Images search allows you to browse the collection. Each page displays a random assortment of images from the collection. If you retrieve something of interest just click the thumbnail for additional information.
The catalog search allows you to search in a selected catalog (Objects, Photos, Archives, Library) or in all four Catalogs. Phrase searching, wildcards (*), as well as AND/OR searching is available in each catalog.
